Thiruthani Murugan Temple, Thiruttani, Tamil Nadu

  • Thiruthani Murugan Temple, Thiruttani, Tamil Nadu

Thiruthani Murugan Temple is located on a hill and the Presiding Deity is known as Thiruthani Murugan or Subramania Swamy.  This is the fifth Temple among the Arupadaivaaedu.  From the foothill of the Temple to the Templetop the Devotees need to climb 365 steps which obviously denotes to the 365 calendar days of a year.  The Main Temple could be reached by a Motor Vehicle too for which they have neatly laid a thar road / ghat road and are collecting a small fee for it. Thirutani is also known by another name in the olden days viz. Kundruthoradal.  It is said that Lord Murugan killed the Demon Tharakasuran or Soorapadman in Thiruchendhur and after killing him He came to rest in Thiruthani hilltop to lessen His anger.  Hence Soora Samharam is not celebrated here.  Thiruthani is said to be the holy place where Lord Murugan is said to have married one of His two Consorts viz. Valli.  The Main temple consists of a five tiered Rajagopuram and four Precincts.  There are individual Sub Shrines for Valli and Devasena.   Usually in most Murugan Temples Peacock is supposed to be His Vahanam whereas here an Elephant has come to stay as His Vahanam. It is a very ancient Temple dating back to pre Sangam days.  Anyhow it was greatly partonized and looked after by the Rulers of Vijayanagara Kingdom and Saint Nakeerar has sung in praise of this Temple in his verses Thirumurugatrupadai.  It is believed that Saint Arunagirinathar has praised this hill skyhigh and had chosen this place of Worship.  Sree Muthusamy Dikshithar a great carnatic musician had sung about this Temple too.   Aadi Kiruthigai is celebrated here in style.  There are rows of shops on the hilltop selling eatables of all varieties and Pooja articles for the benefit of the Devotees who come here.  We have many Devotees who take a vow and come to this Temple from far and near by Foot and thanking Lord Murugan for the benefits that they had derive through Him.  Kaavadi is another form of thankgiving to Lord Murugan by His Devotees.  The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is Saravanapoigai.
