St. Paul's Cathedral is located at Maidan in Kolkata of West Bengal state. This Church belongs to The Church of North India (CNI) or Cathedral of Anglican background in Kolkata. It is said to be the largest Church in Kolkata and the first Anglican Cathedral in Asia. This is the first Cathedral that is built in the overseas territory of the British Empire. This Temple is built following the Indo-Gothic Style of architecture. This Cathedral suffered great damages due to back to back devastating of earthquakes in the years 1897 and 1934. We are now seeing a newer version of the same Cathedral. This Church complex has a library over the western porch and there is a display of plastic art forms and memorabilia. This Cathedral was built to replace St. John's Church, which become too small for Calcutta's growing European Settlement. In 1819 at the request of Francis Rawdon-Hastings officer William Nairn Forbes produced a design for construction of this St. Paul's Cathedral. however, that design was not accepted since it was deemed to be too expensive to construct. Bishop Middleton suggested as a site for this Cathedral known as Five Courts where the Cathedral Complex is built. Middleton died in 1822 before the building plans took shape. The next three Bishops namely Reginald Heber, Thomas James and John Turner all died after their brief tenure because of which the construction of this Church was revived only after Bishop Daniel Wilson took charge in the year 1932. This Church is built on a whopping 7 acres of Land and was built by The Military Engineer, Major General William Nairn Forbes at the request of Bishop Wilson with the assistance of architect C. K. Robinson. This Church is centrally located in the heart of Kolkata Metro City and hence draws lots of Worshippers not only from West Bengal but also from other parts of India too. It has a steady flow of Worshippers during the year end Christmas time and also upto the first week of New Year January.
