Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the 21 Basilica of India. This Church is one of the revered holy places in Pondicherry. Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is built for Roman Catholic Christians living in and around Pondicherry.  This Basilica is considered to be one of the major tourist attraction spots of Pondicherry. The foundation for this beautiful Church was laid in the year 1902. The first Mass Prayer was performed on 17th December 1907. The new Parish that surrounds this church was established in the year 1908. There are Holy glasses present inside this wonderful Church which has the pictures of 28 Saints who were linked to fidelity to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are wooden benches installed in this Church so that devotees can sit and attend the regular Mass Prayer. This Church can accommodate 200 Devotees at a time. This Church is over 100 years old. This Basilica is built by following Gothic style of architecture. The Centenary celebration of this Church was performed in the year 2008 to 2009. Nearly twenty Parish Priests worked hard and led this Church till now. This Church was renovated in the year 2005. This Church also has The Grotto for Our Lady of Lourdes, Parish Hall, Adoration Chapel and the new Parish community hall. Salvatore Pennacchio visited this Church on 2nd September 2011 and gave Basilica status on 24 June 2011.
