Anuvavi Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Periya Thadagam, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

  • Anuvavi Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Periya Thadagam, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Anuvavi Subramaniar Temple which is otherwise known as Anuvavi Murugan Temple is located in a place called Kanuvai in Periya Thadagam bordering Coimbatore.  This Temple is actually situated on the North side slope of Maruthamalai Hills.  It is a Hilltop Temple and there is a Welcome Arch in which Lord Murugan could be seen along with His 2 Consorts as Statues.  From the foothill of the Temple right upto the hilltop there are wide foot steps.  Midway when we climb this Temple there is a Sub Shrine with a huge and massive Idol for Lord Hanuman facing North.  The uphill climb to this Temple is around 500 steps and the kids, sick and elderly may find it a bit tough physically.  There is a perennial spring flowing in this region and it is surprising that this spring never gets dried up even during peak summer.   The origin of this perennial spring is yet to be found out despite special efforts by trekkers of this region.  There is a story behind this perennial spring which says that while carrying the Sanjeevi Hills to Sri Lanka Lord Hanuman felt too thirsty and had to quench His thirst but He could hardly find any signs of water.  Finding out Hanuman’s predicament Lord Murugan threw His Spear and made this spring water appear before Hanuman and relieved Him off  His thirst.  Hanuman took this as a token gift of Lord Murugan for Him.  Anu stands for Lord Hanuman and Vavi means Water and hence the name Anuvavi.  The Presiding Deity is called as Murugan, Subramaniar, Subramanyaswamy etc.  There are Sub Shrines for Lord Vinayaga and Veerabhagu who was an Army Commander with Lord Muruga.  In the year 1957 there were flash floods in which the rain water swept away the Swayambhumoorthy along with 5 Holy Mango Trees.  However in 1969 the Temple was rebuilt yet again and appeared to be similar and good looking like before.  It is one of the rarest of rare Temples in which Lord Murugan was associated with Lord Hanuman.  Soora Samharam, Vaikasi Visakam, Panguni Uthiram and Kiruthigai are celebrated in a grand manner.  Devotees who find it difficult to get married and likewise Childless Couple come here to seek His Blessings and it is believed that their wishes are granted very soon.
