It is alleged that there is a mark on top of the Shiva Lingam which is believed to be the scar made by a Crab. It is widely believed that He wards off all the ill effects of Kadaga Raasi Devotees if they happen to visit this Temple. There are two Consorts for Him in this Temple in two different Shrines and they are known as 1) Goddess Arumarundhu Nayagi and 2) Abhoorva Nayagi. Both the Ambal Shrines are South facing. On the way to the Moolasthanam there are Sub Shrines for Sri Dhanvanthri, Agasthiyar, Kaala Bhairavar, Suryan, Yoga Chandran and Naalvar and all thase Idols face Westward. There are Sub Shrines for Dhakshinamoorthy, Gajalakshmi, Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar, Subramaniyar. The Temple premises is kept meticulously clean but in recent days people afflicted with Cancer come here and perform an Abishekam and it is believed that by doing so they get relieved of the physical pains araising out of the diseases. The Temple has a huge compound wall and gate. Beside the Temple there is a Lotus Pond where it is believed that a Crab plucked a flower and offered it to Lord Karkadeshwarar as a token of its Prayer and later Indran too followed suit and offered a Lotus to the Lord Almighty during his Prayer. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple Periyaa Nangai Siriya Nangai since Kumbakonam is a Temple Town and is situated close to this Temple the tour operators include this Temple in this package and bring in an overwhelming number of Devotees not only from Tamil Nadu but also from North and North East India.
