The former name of Kudavasal was Thirukudavayil. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Koneshwarar or Koneswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. His Consort here is known as Goddess Periyanayagi or Brehannayagi who again is Goddess Parvathi. This Temple is also called as Perunthirukkoil. The Chola Kings took keen interest in building this Temple at an elevated place due to which this Temple is considered as a Maada Koil. This particular Temple was built by the Chola King Kocheng Kann Cholan which means a King with red coloured eyes. This King is relatively famous among the Chola Kings since it is said that he had built more than 70 Temples when he ruled the Chola Empire. The Temple comprises of a tall Rajagopuram which is West facing and measuring around 80 feet along with two Prakaarams or Corridors. The Rajagopuram isn’t tiered and instead it portrays two sculptures depicting Lord Shiva and Parvathy. It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam and Saints Sammandhar and Arunagirinathar have sung in praise of this Temple. The lower half of the Temple is called as Kudavayir Kottam where he had imprisoned a Chera King Seran Kanaikaal Irumporai for several months. The Presiding Deity, Lord Koneswarar Blesses His Devotees from the Sanctum Sanctorum. Apart from the Main Shrine there are few other Sub Shrines for Vinayaga, Murugan & His two Consorts, Thaanthondrinaathar, Kasi Viswanathar, Natarajar, Dhakshnamoorthy, Chandikeswarar, Bhairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Sapthamaathas, Soodha Munivar, Saniswarar, Naga Devathas, Naalvar, Sundaramoothry Nainar, Paravai Nachiyar, Dhandapani, Idumban, Kalaimagal and Gajalakshmi. Lord Garudalwar is seen here as Praying to Lord Koneshwarar. There is no Sub Shrine for Durga in this Temple since the Goddess is portrayed as Brahadurgai. The Sthala Viruksham is a Vazhai Maram or a Plantain Tree and the Sacred Tank or the Pushkarani of this Temple is known as Amirtha Theertham. This Temple assumes much of its significance for its 1) Moorthy 2) Sthalam and 3) Theertham. Devotees here Pray to Lord Sooryan and Chandran for their forefathers and hence this is called as Pithru Dosha Parihaara Sthalam. The Presiding Deity Koneswarar is worshipped for Prosperity and Wisdom.
