Pateeswarar Temple is located on the banks of River Noyyal in Perur on the West of Coimbatore where Lord Patteswarar is an incarnation of Lord Shiva is the Presiding Deity. This Temple is just 9 Kms away from Coimbatore City. In earlier times Perur was known as Adhipuri or Pattipuri. The Temple construction was started by the late Chola King Karikala Cholan in the 2nd Century. Later King Raja Raja Cholan too is believed to have a paid a visit and had done some constructional activities too. The Hoysala and the VIjayanagara Kings played an important role in building this Temple. The Consort of Lord Pateeswarar, who is a Swayambhu Lingam is known as Pachai Nayaki. The Temple has several Rajagopurams and Halls of which Kanaka Sabhai wherein Lord Nataraja housed as an Golden Statue is very famous. This Kanaga Sabai was built by Madurai Nayakar. The Patti Vinayagar Shrine found closeby is also well known. There are Sub Shrines for Gaja Samhara, Veerabadra, Bikshadhana, Oordhva Thandava, Sarawathi etc. Irava Panai and Pirava Puli are the Palm and Tamarind Trees associated with the Sacred Temple. Bharathanatyam Dance is closely associated with this Temple and many school going and college girls come here and perform their dance where Lord Shiva is supposed to have performed His Aanandha Thandavam. It is so thought that such kids who perform here before the Lord Almighty sharpen and improve their dancing skills. The Temple has a lavishly constructed Temple Car or Chariot which is taken round the neighbourhood during Panguni Uthiram and such other important days. The Perur Paddithurai is just 200 meters North of the Temple towards the Noyyal River and the Sacred Pond is situated opposite to the Temple. This Temple attracts a lot of Devotees apart from Indian and Foreign Tourists. It attrracts a lot of Devotees for its ancient art work, paintings, sculptures and carvings.
