The Presiding Deity is Lord Sankara Narayanan who is considered to be a fusion of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu together. The Temple was built in the 11th Century by King Ukkira Pandiyan. The Temple is Unique in having Lord Shiva & Lord Vishnu together in the Sanctum. This Temple gains prominence since its considered as a Pancha Bootha Sthalam. The Rajagopuram which is 125 feet high comprises of 9 Tiers. The Gopuram has many Stucco Images & a Huge Courtyard around the 3 Sanctums. The Nandhi here is known as Adhikara Nandhi and his Consort is Suyajadevi. Gomathi Amman is located in a separate Shrine. The Town Sankarankovil derives its name from this Temple. The Ant Hill Sand Prasadam given to Devotees is said to Cure many Ailments. The Temple is of Dravidian Architecture and designed so that the Sun Rays falls on the Icon of Lord Sankara Lingam for 3 days from 21st of each month. The Sthala Viruksham is Punnai Maram. The Sacred Tank is known as Naga Sunai Theertham. Aadi Thapasu Festival is much noted and draws lots of Devotees. There are several shops located around the Temple.
