This Temple is also known as Sri Thothathirinatha Perumal Temple and it is located in a village called Vanamamalai close to Nanguneri. The Temple is more than 1500 years old and the Pandya Kings and the Nayak Kings along with the Vijayanagara Kings had done a lot for this Temple in promoting it to this level. It is also revered as one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples dedicated to Maha Vishnu. The Temple built on the banks of River Thamirabharani has been glorified skyhigh by the Alwar Saints in their Naalayira Divya Prabhandham. The Temple has a majestic five tiered Rajagopuram along with two Prahaarams. There are various other pillared halls in this Temple. The Presiding Deity of Vanamamalai Perumal is found seated on an Aadhiseshan or a Serpant God along with His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The Presiding Deity is seen holding a Prayoga Chakram with which He Blesses His Devotees and it is believed that such Devotees who get His Blessings would get rid of all their enemies. The Gingelly oil Abhishekam done to the Presiding Deity is noteworthy of mentioning here and this is stored and distributed to such Devotees who have serious skin or Dermatalogical problems. Repeated use of this Holy Oil is believed to get rid of all such skin disorders. This Holy Oil is otherwise known as Sarva Roha Nivarani Thailam. The Consort of the Presiding Deity is Goddess Varaga Mangai Thaayar and She occupies a Sub Shrine form where She Blesses Her Devotees. It is noteworthy that this Temple is one of the eight Swayambhu Kshetrams. The other seven Swayambhu Kshethrams are as follows: 1) Sri Rangam Ranganathar Temple, 2) Bhoo Varahaswamy Temple, 3) Thirumalai Balaji Temple, 4) Saligrama Temple, 5) Naimi Saranya Temple, 6) Pushkar Temple and 7) Badrinath Temple. This Temple is noted for its eye captivating carvings and sculptors of Maha Vishnu's Dasavatharam. The Javvandhi Mandapam and the Veerappa Nayak Mandapam speaks volume about the Nayak Rulers who had built it. This Temple comes under the Control and Administration of Vanamamalai Mutt and they follow the Thenkalai Sampradayam for conducting the Temple rituals. The Sthala Viruksham is a Mango Tree and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is called as Setruththamarai. The major festival performed here is supposed to be the 12 day Brahmmothsavam during the Tamil month of Thai. Likewise the Chariot festival of this Temple is conducted during the Tamil month of Chithirai with great fanfare.
