The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Ekambareswarar or Ekambaranathar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Elavarkuzhali, She is none other than Goddess Parvathy. This is the first Saivaite Temple that was built in Thondainadu. Ekambareshwarar Temple is one of the Panja Boodha Sthalam of Lord Shiva and it is dedicated to the element Earth. Though the Presiding Deity is Lord Shiva, Lord Nilathingal Thundam Perumal also has an equal importance. This Temple has been praised by Nayanmars in the Seventh Century's Thevaram because of which this Temple is considered as Padal Petra Sthalam. The Presiding Deity is called as Ekambareshwarar or Lord of Mango since it is believed that the Deity was made out of sand near a mango tree by Goddess Parvathy. This Temple is built on a whopping 25 acres of land and is considered as one of the largest Temples in the entire India. Ekambareswarar Temple was built by the Chola Kings in the 9th century and was later developed by the Rulers of Vijayanagara Empire. This Temple has four Rajagopurams and the south facing Rajagopuram is the tallest of all standing to a height of 197 feet which makes it the tallest ever Rajagopuram in the whole world. During the Pradosham, New Moon, Full Moon, Chathurthi and Mahashivarathri days special poojas are performed and Devotees from far flung areas visit this Temple during these days.
