Kukke Subramanya Temple is a very famous Hindu Temple located in Dakshina Kannada or South Karnataka located on the banks of River Kumaradhara. It is situated in the Western Ghat Range of Karnataka. On the other side of the Temple is the famous Mountain Kumara Parvatha which is a popular trekking place too. Any Devotees preferring to visit Kukke Subrahmanya Temple always prefer to have a Holy Dip in River Kumaradhara before they enter the Temple to have a glimpse of their favourite God. There is a belief that any Devotee who enters the Temple has to go round the Garuda Pillar which is covered with Silver and it is believed that this Garuda Pillar and its Silver Shield prevents the poisonous flames araising out of the breathe of Vasuki who resides inside. Some say that Kukke Subramanya is one among the seven places created by Saint Parasurama. It is believed through the epics which narrates as to how the Divine Serpant Vasuki along with several other snakes took refuge under Lord Subramanya in the caves here. Lord Subramanya Himself is worshipped as a snake and considered as the Presiding Deity and Poojas are offered to Him on this basis. The Moolasthanam's wall has been built with huge wooden logs and the ceiling or roofing has been packed with Mangalore tile like giving the Temple a typical Kerala style of Architecture. Unlike other Hindu Temples this Temple has a white colour Rajagopuram facing West and close to this is a colourful Temple Car. There are several counters located just outside the Temple for special Darshan, Prasadams, Sevas, Annadhanam, Protocol and for Luggage Room. On entering the Temple through the Rajagopuram there is a Annadhanakoodam known as Shanmuga Prasada Dining Hall. On the right side is a huge mandapam with a stage and divine functions and other rituals could be held there. There is a village Deity or a Grama Devadhai known as Hosali Gammana Gudi. There are Sub Shrines for Uma Maheswarar, Kaala Bhairavar, Kashikatte Ganapathy etc. It is an ultimate solace for anyone who is down with Naga Dhosham to visit Kukke Subrahmanya Temple and get rid from all its ill effects. It has worked miracles for scores of Devotees like this. Some Devotees perform a ritual serpantine dance called Naga Mandhala. This is the reason as to why this Temple is considered as a Naaga Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam or Sarpa Dosha Parihaara Sthalam and Rahu Kethu Parihaara Sthalam. Generally the Shivali Madhwa Brahmins are appointed as the Temple Preists here. Shasti, Naga Panchami, Nagaradhane etc are some other famous festivals here. The main attraction of this Temple is its Temple Tusker and the Elephant is affectionately called as SSV by initials only. When kids call its name SSV it is amazing to see the Elephant responding to it by turning towards them.
Close to the Main Temple is another ancient Temple called as Aadhi Subramanya Temple and this Temple is believed to have been built several centuries prior to the Main Temple. The Main Deity of this Temple is so eye captivating and it is believed that He is Omnipotent. This Temple is accessible by foot and Devotees may have to walk through rows of shops and a park to reach this Adhi Subramaniya Temple. This Temple is open for the Devotees from 6 AM to 7 PM continuously.
