The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Shiva. This Temple is considered as Dakshin Kasi or Kasi of South India. Mahabaleshwara in Gokarna is considered as one of the 7 Mukthisthalam or Mukthi Kshetra of Karnataka. Many Hindus perform final rites for their beloved departed souls. This Temple is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalam of South India since this Temple has been praised in the 7th Century Tamil Holy Text Devaram by Appar and Sambandar. This Temple was built by Mayurasharma between 345 CE – 365 CE. Though this Temple was built by Mayurasharma it was the Vijayanagara Kings who developed this Temple to it's current structure. This Temple is built facing Gokarna Sea and Devotees visiting this Temple take a Holy dip  in the Arabian Sea before entering this Temple complex. The Presiding Deity is known as Athma Lingam and it is believed that this Lingam was installed by Demon King Ravana. Everyday thousands of Devotees visit this Temple from different parts of India.
