Shree Swaminarayan Temple is located in Kalupur, Ahmedabad. It is one of the primary Temple of the Swaminarayan Sampradhay who manage it. The founder was Sri Swami Narayan upon whose will the Swami Narayan Sampradhay was divided into two seats named 1) Narnarayan Dev Gadi and 2) Lakshmi Narayan Dev Gadi. Swami Narayan was born in Uttar Pradesh and renamed as Ghanshyam Pande later. Initially the land meant for this Temple was given by the Britishers. The Temple was built in the year 1822 and it resembles the Indo Saracenic style of Architecture which was prevalent during those days. The Temple was built on a whopping area of land and it took several hundreds of men to complete the full constructiuon of this Temple. The construction work was taken over by Ananadand Swami on the instructions of Swaminarayan. Burma Teak wood was fully used for the construction work. This Temple could boast of having one of the finest woodworks in India. The Temple looks gorgeous to the eyes of the Devotees since paints of different colours have been used lavishly. The Temple has Sub Shrines of Narayan Dev, Radhakrishna Dev, Dharmadev, Bakthi Matha and Harkrishna. The stones used for carving such intricate Deities where brought from the quarries of Himmath Nagar and they where chiselled in Dungarpur. Besides the Main Deities a child Idol of Ghanshyam Maharaj is seen too in a place called Rangamahol. The belongings of Swami Narayan has been displayed in this Temple for the sake of the visiting Devotees. There is a tinge of Gujarathi, Rajasthani, Marathi and British style in this Temple. The Temple has several floors and in some the Idols have animal heads. They have a Music School and a Sanskrit School functioning here. Flowers, Creepers and Plants are found in abundance around the Temple. To the rear of the Temple is a residences for the Brahmmachari students. A Divine Well found in the backyard where Swami Narayan used to bathe in those days is still preserved. The most important aspect of this Temple is that it is located in an area predominently occupied by Muslims but still there is Peace and Harmony.
