Sri Iyyappa Temple is located in a scenic ambience on the banks of River Bharatapuzha in Chamravattom which is close to Tirur in Malappuram District of Kerala. Devotees may have to cross an Iron Bridge before they could enter Sri Ayyappa Temple which is West facing. Just opposite to the Moolasthanam is a five tiered huge oil lamp which is placed atop a Tortoise. The walls of the Moolasthanam has been built with an eye appealing black stones. The threshold leading to the Moolasthanam dazzles with gold platings all over. Lord Iyyappa Swami who is otherwise known as Sastha is the Presiding Deity and He is found in the Sanctum Sanctorum facing West. It is believed that Sage Parasurama established the Swambhu Shila and later Sabari Maharishi was fortunate enough to rediscover the Sacred Moorthy. The former name of Chamravattom was known as Shambaravottam. Many say that this Sastha Temple was constructed by Perumthachan who is the master craftsman and an able handed sculptor. This Temple has been renovated in the recent past and it is one of the 108 Sastha Temples said to be found all over Kerala. Sastha or Iyyappan is the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini. Mohini is considered as a lady incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is widely believed that Lord Iyyappan had two wives in Poorna and Pushkala. There is a small East facing Sub Shrine in which the Idols of Ganapathy, Iyyappan, Durgai, Bhadrakali and Lord Shiva are kept and revered. The Temple has facilities to light ghee lamps all over the walls. There is a Seva Counter where Devotees can pay for various types of Sevas. A small Prasada Counter is also found within the Temple premises. In normal days Devotees could reach the Temple by crossing the Iron Bridge opposite to which there are few shops selling all types of Divine and Pooja articles. During seasonal rains the river gets flooded and half the Temple is inundated with flood waters. Even during such seasonal floods the Purohits of this Temple make it a point to reach the Temple through ferry or dinghy and offer their Prayers to complete the Pooja rituals. The road leading to this Temple is full of mud and stones and Devotees amy have to reach it carefully while coming by vehicles. The car parking though available is small and narrow. Devotees coming from outstation and from far flung places may find that Temple with its scenic beauty, a pleasure and a treat to watch.
