Sri Virupaksha Temple is one of the most important Temples of Hampi with a lot of historical importance. It is believed that this Temple was constructed by a Nayak Chieftan Lakkan Dandesha who served under Deva Raya II. Some would argue that Sri Virupaksha Temple was built in a small way even before the Vijayanagara period. The Temple is located on the banks of River Thungabadra which is also known as River Pampa. It is one among the several Temples in Hampi that was looted and plundered by the Moghuls but it still stands strong to this day. The Temple has a 9 tiered East facing Rajagopuram which still looks resplendent. There are two Nandhi Vahanams and a Hanuman Idol beneath the Rajagopuram. Beyond this 9 tiered Rajagopuram there is another small 3 tiered East facing Rajagopuram. This Temple has 5 tiered Rajagopurams on the West, North and South too. There are several huge multi pillared Mandabams outside the Temple premises. There are two Dwara Baalakas at the threshold of the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity here is Sri Virupaksha who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is seen in the Sanctum Sanctorum as a Swayambu Sivalingam and is East facing. He is also known as Pampa Pathi. Two Somaskandar Idols kept outside the Moolasthanam are revered and Prayed. Close to the Sanctum Sanctorum is another Shrine for Goddess Pampa Devi who is none other than Goddess Parvathy. There are 2 Dwajasthambams or Flag Staff, a Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam facing the Moolasthanam. There is another Sub Shrine for Goddess Bhuvaneswari too. There is a huge sacred Temple Tank or Pushkarani close to the Northern Rajagopuram. This Temple has various other Sub Shrines for different Deities. The Temple Office functions within the Temple premises. There is a huge Car Parking available and Cars and other vehicles like Bus etc could be parked there with ease. There are also several shops outside the Temple selling all Divine and Pooja articles. Facing this Virupaksha Temple is a huge Bull Idol carved out of a single stone. Though this Temple has been designated as one of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites Pooja and other Divine Rituals are regularly performed here. Many perform their Weddings and Engagements in Sri Virupaksha Temple.
