Arulmigu Agneeshwarar Temple is located in a place called Nerur on the outskirts of Karur. The Presiding Deity is several centuries old but the former Temple was dilapidaed completely. The renovation work has been taken up in all earnest and the Temple is being constructed exquisitely. Many say that this Temple was built during the Chola period between the 10th to 12th century but there is no inscriptions or evidences to proove it. This is an East facing Temple but Devotees coming here by vehicles ought to park them on the Western side and enter this Temple. The Rajagopuram, Neivedhiya Peedam and the Dwajasthambam are likely to come up sooner than later. This Temple has an East facing multi pillared corridor and each of these pillars have amazingly carved Idols on them. The first entry point on the left leads to the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Presiding Deity of Sri Agneeshwarar. Just before this entrance are two huge black Idols of the Dwarabalakaas who stand majestically. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Agneeswarar is found as a Swayambhu Sivalingam facing East. It is presumed that Sri Arumugham or Subramanyar had installed this Swayambhu Sivalingam several centuries ago. The second entry point too has two huge Dwara Baalakas on either side leading to the Murugan Sannadhi. Sri Murugan is seen in a East facing standing posture and He is known as Sri Arumughanar. He is seen here with six faces and 12 hands and strangely He is seen without His Consorts Valli and Devasena. The Koshtam around Murugan's Shrine has the Idols of 18 Siddhars around it. There is an Idol of Sage Agasthiyar and another Siddhar on either side of Sri Arumugham's Shrine. The third entry point has two Dwara Baalakis Idols and in the third Shrine Soundara Nayaki Ambal is seen East facing and in a standing posture. There is a South facing Sub Shrine for Lord Natarajar and close to Him are the Idols of Vyakarapadhar and Sage Pathanjali. Most Pillars of this Temple has a Simha Idol at its base giving them a facelift. There is a Navagraha Sannadhi and Idols for Ganapathy, Naalwar, Dhakshinamurthy, Chandikeshwarar and Bhairavar are also seen. The Sthala Virukham of this Temple is a Vanni Maram whereas the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is one of the small tributary of River Kaveri. Saint Arunagirinathar had sung in praise of the Temple during his days. This Temple is coming up in a very big manner and in a few years from now it might be one of the leading Temples in Karur attracting a lot of Devotees not only from nearby areas but from distant places too. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
