Sri Beteraya Swamy Temple in Denkanikottai is around 1,000 years old and is built in Hoysala style architecture. Its located in Krishnagiri District in Tamil Nadu and is very near to the industrial city of Hosur. This Temple follows the Thenkalai tradition among vaishnavites. It has a 5 Tier Rajagopuram. The Moolavar is Sri Bettaraya Swamy. Beteraya in Kannada language means one who hunts down the Demons. Sri Beteraya Swamy did this hunting since the demons were a menace to the Penance of Kanva Maharishi. There is a huge Pushkarani or a Temple Tank adjoining the Temple. Water is never a scarcity in this temple tank on any given day. Lord Vishnu is the Presiding Deity here and His Consort is Goddess Soundaravalli Thaayar. Notes about this Temple and its details finds a place in Skandha Purana. When the Moghuls invaded this place the Presiding Deity was hidden by an ardent Devotee Venkatapathy Rayar in deep forests and brought out later. The Temple has an excellent granite compound wall. The Temple Priests are from a hereditary family referred as Kittambi. They are believed to be from Thiruvellarai in Tiruchirapalli District. The Temple maintenance is looked after by the descendants of Inanyacharya family from Mandya District, Karnataka, though it is under the control of the HR &CE department of TN Government.
