Thiruvakkarai is a small village beyond Tindivanam and the road from Kooteripattu leads us here. The Temple has a Welcome Arch a few Kilometers before the Temple near Perumbakkam. The Temple has a majestic seven tiered Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Chandramouleeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva and the Shiva Lingam is said to be a Swayambhumoorthy. The Shiva Lingam has 3 faces representing Shiva, Brahmma and Vishnu respectively and they face East, North and South directions respectively. Hence it is also referred as Mummuga Lingam. His Consorts are known as Amirthambikai Ambal and Vadivambikai Ambal. The Presiding Deity though is Sri Chandramouleeswarar, Goddess Vakrakali gains more prominence and importance than Shiva Himself. It is said that everything in this Temple right from the Idols of different Gods, Dwajasthambam etc are said to be Vakram which denotes that they are not in their usual self but look different or contrary otherwise. Usually Kaali Temples are built at the border of a village but here it is very unusual that the Shrine of Vakrakali Amman is located within the Chandramouleeswarer Temple. The story behind this is Shiva offered immortality boon to Demon King Vakrasuran who then went on a killing spree. To finish him off Maha Vishnu brought in Vakrakali as Goddess Parvathy and She drank every droplet of his blood spilling to the ground. It is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 30th Shiva Sthalam located in Thondainadu. The Temple has stood the test of times and the vagaries of nature and is said to be more than 2000 years old. King Adithya Cholan of the Chola Dynasty took keen interest in building this Temple on the banks of Varaha River. This Temple has Sub Shrines for Natarajar, Pichandar, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Kaala Bhairavar, Arthanareeswarar, Kundalini Munivar, Nageswarar, Chandikeshwarar, Sapthamathas and Durgai. There is a Sub Shrine for Varadaraja Perumal too who is seen in a standing posture but is without His Consorts. The Sacred Tank or Theertham are Varaha River, Surya Pushkarani and Chandra Pushkarani whereas the Sacred Tree or Sthala Viruksham is a Vilva Maram. Saint Thirugnana Sambandar had sung very high about this place. This Temple is a famous Parihaara Sthalam for all types of Vakra Dhosham. Especially Devotees who experienced Vakra Shani period in their horoscope could visit this Temple and pray for relief from the adverse effects of Shani Bhagawan and Vakra Dosham. Full Moon day or Pournami and New Moon day or Amavasai are very important days of the Temple and it attracts a huge number of Devotees during that time.
