This Temple is also known as Balambigai Udanurai Deerkachaleswarar Temple and Nedungunam is also known as Nedunkundram formerly.  The Presiding Deity is Lord Shiva in the form of   Dheerkachaleswarar and Goddess in the form of Balambikai.  The Temple is more than 1200 years old and is believed to have been built by Chola Kings.  Lord Dheerkajaleswarar is in the form of Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum whereas His Consort has a separate Sub Shrine and is known as Balambigai.  On entering the Temple there is a Paadala Lingam much below the surface level and Devotees have to go down by several steps in utter darkness to have a glimpse of this Baadala Lingam and a small Nandhi placed before Him.  The Temple has Sub Shrines for Suriyan, Chandiran, Suga Brahma Rishi, Valampuri Vinayagar, Kaala Bhairavar, Iyyappan, Srinivasa Perumal, Dhakshina Moorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma, Chandikeshwarar, Durgai and Murugan and His Consorts.  To appease the Rain God there is a separate Shrine for the Saptha Mathas viz. Brahmi, Maheswari, Goumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi.  The Sthala Viruksham is a Vilva Tree beneath which Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi along with their sons Ganesha and Murugan as a family Bless the Devotees depicting as though they are Blessing them from the Kailaya Malai or Mount Himalaya and this place is neatly enclosured and painted with gorgeous colours.  There is a Navagraha Sannadhi within the premises.  This Temple has its kitchen functioning from a nearby building were Annadhanam and food items are prepared on Pradasham and other festive days.  This Temple does not have a regular Priest and hence the needs of the Temple are takan care of by a Trust viz. Sivanadiyaar Thirukoota Arakattalai whose head is Mr.Pachaiappan.
