Sri Eri Katha Ramar Temple, Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu

  • Sri Eri Katha Ramar Temple, Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu

The Presiding Deity is Lord Rama who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In this Temple He is known as Eri Katha Ramar and the Deity is 8 feet tall in a standing Posture. The Temple was built around 1650 years ago during the Pallava era. The Cholas who ruled here called Madhuranthakam as Chathurvedi Mangalam. The Vimanam for this Temple is called Pushpaka Vimanam. During the British regime when Colonel Lionnel Blaze was the Collector the Temple was inundated due to torrential rains and on the Prayers of the Collector Lord Rama is said to have appeared in his dream and had saved the Temple. As the Thanks giving theory he built the Janakavalli Thayar Shrine. Lord Rama is seen in the Sanctum along with Seetha and Lakshmana, whereas Lord Anjaneya is seen in a separate Shrine outside the Temple. The Temple is unique since it is one of the rare Temples where Lord Rama is found holding Seetha's hand. There are exclusive Shrines for Sri Ramanujar and Sri Periya Nambigal. Sri Ramanujar was instructed Samskaara Manthram and became Sri Periya Nambigal's disciple here. The small Mandapam were Sri Ramanujar undertook Pancha Samskaram is still seen. There is a secret Tunnel leading from the Lake to the Temple Tank through this Temple. The Pushkarani is called as Sri Rama Theertham but it has to be spruced up and kept clean.  There is a Vasantha Mandapam and beyond it is a Ghoshala where cattles are taken care off. The Sthala Virukasham is Magizha Maram. Sri Rama Navami attracts lots of Devotees. This is one of the oldest Temples for Sri Rama in the entire South India.
