Sri Kadambavaneshwarar Temple or Kadambar Kovil is located in Kulithalai Town. It is a huge Temple built on a whopping area. It is one among the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam. Saint Thirunavukkarasar had sung very high of this Temple. It is widely believed that the Presiding Deity Kadambavaneswarar appeared here to Kanva Maharishi in the Kadamba forest which was dense then and hence this place came to be known as Kadambathurai. It is believed that Thirumaal, Brahmma, Murugan, Sapthamaathas and Sage Agasthiyar had come here to seek the Blessings of Sri Kadambawaneshwarar. To begin with there is a North facing Gopuram on top of which the Idols of Somaskandar, Ganapathy and Murugan are seen. This Gopuram leads to a multi pillared Mandapam. Beyond this is a gorgeously painted North facing five tiered Rajagopuram. There are numerous shops selling Divine Pooja articles etc. There is a tall Dwajasthamabam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a South facing Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. There are two huge Idols of Dindi and Mundi who happen to be the Dwara Baalakas guarding the Sanctum Sanctorum. Next to them are the Idols of Ganapathy and Murugan. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Kadambawaneshwarar is seen North facing in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. This is the only Temple of its kind with a North facing Swayamabhu Shiva Lingam. In the inner peripheral there is a South facing Natarajar Sannadhi and a West facing Shani Bhagwan. Close to this Saneeswaran Sannadhi is a Navagraha enclosure and on top of the Navagraha enclosure is an Idol of Navagraha Subramaniyar. In the same inner peripheral there are North facing Pillaiyar, Shivalingam, Jestadevi, Naalvar and 63 Naayanmaars. Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Anukyai Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Veerabadrar, Naagar, Vinayagar, Prithvi Lingam, Theyu Lingam, Vaayu Lingam, Agasa Lingam and Jala Lingam, Somaskandar, Gajalakshmi, Urchavamoorthies are all East facing in the inner peripheral. Around the Koshtam the Idols of Brahmma, Chandikeshwarar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar and Arunagirinathar could be seen. The Ambal in this Temple is known as Sri Muttrila Mulaiyammai or Sri Balagujambal and She has a separate East facing Shrine where She is seen in a standing posture. There are two Dwara Baalakis standing guard before the Shrine of Sri Muttrila Mullaiyammai. There is a South facing Palliyarai and a Chandikeshwari Sannadhi close to the Ambal's Shrine. The Temple has an outer peripheral in which Bhairavar, and Naagars are seen. The Temple has a Madapalli and a huge Annadhana Koodam in the outer peripheral. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Kadamba Maram and the Theertham is Kaveri Theertham. There is a Vasantha Mandapam In the outer peripheral of the Temple. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. There is a staunch belief that this Temple along with Sri Rathnagireeswarar Temple, Ayyarmalai and Sri Maragathachaleswarar Temple, Thiruengoimalai ought to be worshipped on the same day and if that is done it would be construed on par with going to Kasi. Since this Temple is unique in having a North facing Swayambhu Shiva Lingam it is considered as Dhakshina Kasi.
