The Presiding Deity is Lord Rama also known as Kothanda Ramaswamy who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the Chola Kings started the construction of the Temple during its early days. Later on the Kings of VIjayanagara Dynasty took over and accomplished the mission of completing this Temple in the 16th Century. Another version is that two robers by name Vontodu and Mittudu who later on became stauch Ram Devotees built this Temple. Its a massive Temple with Vijayanagara Architechture. It is believed that Kishkindhakanda had occured in this region. The great Saint Poet Annamacharya is believed to have visited here and sung in praise of the Temple. It has 3 Gopurams or Towers with multiple sculptures. The two Temple Tanks are being renovated and spruced up. The Idols of Lord Rama, Seetha and Lakshmana have been carved and made out of a single stone. The Mandapam in which the dancing Ganesha is kept is supported by 32 pillars with artistic beauty. The Temple is very Unique since its the only Ram Temple were Seetha Kalyanam is performed after Sunset in the night. It is also strange that Hanuman does not find a place in this Temple, but instead is found in a seperate opposite to the Sanctum Sanctorum and He is known a Baktha Anjaneya Swamy. Sri Rama Navami attracts a large number of Devotees from far and near. The Temple has huge lawns with ample car parking space too. All ancient monuments here are preserved and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. In 1652 Jean Baptiste Tavernier, French Historian who visited Vontimitta had commented tha this Temple was the Jewel in the Crown and appreciated its Architechture.
