Sree Kukkuteshwar Swami Temple is located in Pithapuram which is around 15 Kms from Kakinada. The Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram which is North facing and on either side of it are two Dwara Baalakas. On entering the premises there is a huge Pushkarani or a Sacred Tank where swimming is not allowed. The entire area around this Sacred Tank is cemented and there are benches around it for the Devotees to sit and relax. A few Shiva Lingams and Nandhi Bhagwan are intermittently placed in this area. There is a small Mandapam on the banks of the Sacred Tank in which a blue coloured Idol of Lord Shiva facing North is kept and Prayed. There is a Nandhi Idol on one end of the Sacred Tank facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. A huge massive Idol of Gayasuran is found to be floating in this Sacred Tank. Maha Vishnu, Shiva and Brahmma are found to be near Gayasuran's Body. The top of the float is decorated with colourful paints with an Idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. It is believed that Gayasuran disturbed a lot of Brahmins in ancient times and on their request, Shiva in the form of Kukkuteshwar came down and shred the body of Gayasuran to pieces. It is said that his head fell in Gaya, his chest and belly in Jajipuram and his feet in Pithapuram. Therefore this place is considered as Padagaya Kshethram. Lord Kukkuteshwara Swamy is an incarnation of Lord Shiva and His Consort is known here as Goddess Oomkarani. In the Moolasthanam Goddess Oomkarani could be not be seen directly by the Devotees, but instead there is a mirror placed closeby and if the Devotees look at the mirror the Image of Goddess Oomkarani could be seen by them very clearly. The mother of Lord Shiva is known as Rajarajeswari. The Shiva Lingam found in the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Swayambhu Spadiga Lingam which is around 2 feet height and is in the shape of a cock and the Nandhi Bhagwan Idol found here is famous since it was carved out out of a single stone making it a Ekashila Nandhi. There is an exclusive Sub Shrine in which the foot prints of Gayasuran and Maha Vishnu are embedded and found. This Temple is unique since The Shiva Lingam is a Swayambhumoorthy and so are Sri Guru Dattatreya Swamy and Sri Kasi Viswanathar. Hence visiting this Temple is as good as visiting the Temples in Kashi and Gaya. The Temple is considered as one of the Sakthipeetam. Guru Dattatreya Swamy is differently found in this Temple. Generally in most other Temples Dattatreya is found in white coloured marble but here the Idol of Swamy Dattatreya is seen as a black Vigraham. In another Shrine Kasi Vishwanathar could be seen as a Swayambhu Lingam. Goddess Visalakshi as Annapoorani too is seen closeby. There are Sub Shrines for Ganapathy, Subramaniyar, Nagendra Swamy, Ayyappan, Purohitika Devi, Kaala Bhairava along with the Navagraha enclosure. Lord Rama, Goddess Seetha and Lakshmana too are seen in another Shrine. There is an exclusive mandapam where Divine functions and Weddings could be conducted. Close to it is the Temple Chariot in an enclosure and close to these is a wooden Palanquin which could be used on festive occasions. The Temple has a carparking diagonally opposite to the Temple where vehicles could be parked for a fee. There are severals shops making the main road near the Temple look narrow and Divine Pooja articles could be bought here. Maha Shivarathiri, Dussera are some of the festivals that are celebrated here with a great following.
