Ayyavadi or Ivarpadi as it was called during the earlier times is quite some distance away from Kumbakonam Town. Now this place is famous for Sree Maha Prathyangara Devi Temple since scores of Devotees from far and near keep coming here to have a glimpse of the Goddess and to get Her Blessings. This Temples has two entrances but the Northern entrance is considered as the Main entrance. The Presiding Deity of Goddess Prathyagara Devi is North facing from Her Shrine and She has eighteen hands and is flanked on either side by Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathi. She has a face of a Lion and is surrounded by 4 Lion Vigrahams all around. It is widely believed that Goddess Prathyangira Devi would ward away all evil spirits and black magic spun sround Her Devotees. The Temple is unique since there is no Archanai or Abishegam done to the Deity whereas normal Dheepa Araadhanai is done on regular basis. The threshold leading to the Sanctum Sanctorum is fully gold plated and resplendant to look at with Sarabeshwar on one side and Goddess Thara Devi on the either side besides a few other Images of Sages etched on it. All the Pillars too have gold platings over them. It is believed that the Panja Pandavas had come here during their days and had offered Pooja to Her with a Banyan Leaf. Hence the Banyan Tree kept within the Temple premises is considered as a Sthala Viruksham. Ravana's son Meghanathan had come here and Prayed before he defeated Lord Indran in a close battle and got the name Indrajith. It is also said the Lord Krishna had visited this Temple and was Blessed with a son Prithyummanan named after this Goddess. As Devotees enter the Temple through the Northern entrance there are of two huge sitting Lions or Simha Vaahanam close to which is a Bali Peedam kept within an iron railing on an elevated podium. There is an exclusive Sub Shrine for Pillayar and another Sub Shrine for Agastheewara Swamy who is East facing in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Lord Suryan is found facing Lord Agastheeswarar. The Ambal's Sub Shrine of Goddess Dharmasamvarthini is South facing in a multi pillared Mandapam. The latest Kumbabishekam for this Temple was done on 11-06-2009. The Name and Fame of Goddess Prathyangara Devi is spreading far and wide due to which there is a steady increase of Devotees who visit the Temple.
