Arulmigu Mallikeshwarar Temple is located in a bustling Mannady area of Chennai in No.263, Lingi Chetty Street. This Temple is also known as Mallikajunar Temple said to have been constructed being the British era in Mannady or George Town as it was called in those days. It is said that a Chola King who came to hunt here along with his soliders found the Shiva Lingam buried beneath the mud and excavated it in order to bring it out and hence the name Mannadi for this place. Since the area where the Shiva Lingam was found was surrounded by Jasmine the God was called as Mallikeswarar. Just before the Rajagopuram there is a multi pillared Mandapam in which 3 of the Temple Chariots are kept preserved for use during festive occasions. Apart form this there is another bigger Chariot which is closed with a tin sheet. The Temple has a seven tiered Rajagopuram which is South facing. This Temple has 2 ways leading to the Sanctum Sanctorum. Devotees could enter the Moolasthanam from the South passing through the Rajagopuram. Another way to reach the Sanctum Sanctorum is to circumambulate and enter it from the Eastern side where the Dwajasthambam, a Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam are placed. At the threshold of the Moolasthanam is a pair of Dwara Baalakas standing on either side of the doorway. The Presiding Deity in the Moolasthanam is Sri Mallikeswarar who happens to be an incarnation of Shiva. He is supposed to be a Swayambhumoorthy Shiva Lingam who is East facing. Just outside the Moolasthanam are 3 Naga Devathas along with a miniature Nandhi Vaahanam and a Shiva Lingam. All the pillars in this Mandapam are embedded with various Divine Sculptures. There is a sparkling Natarajar Shrine and another Shrine for Somaskandar, who is supposed to be the Urchavamoorthy. Next to it is the Ambal Sannadhi of Goddess Maragathambigai who is considered as an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. It is believed that centuries before the Idol of Maragathambigai was said to be of Maragatha Kal or Emerald. During the Moghul invasion the Ambal Shrine too was plundered and Her original Emerald or Maragathakal Idol was taken away never to be returned. Now this Idol is newly made of a ordinary stone. All these 3 Shrines noted above are South facing. There is a Dwajasthambam, a Bali Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam facing the Ambal Sannadhi of Goddess Maragathambigai. Around the Koshtam there are Idols for Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Chandikeshwarar, Durgai. In the inner peripherals there are Idols for Ganapathy, Valli Devasena Samedha Murugan, Chandrasekarar, Mahadevar, Aadhipureeswarar, Arumugaswamy, Saraswathy, Naalvar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Polla Pillayar, Sundaramoorthy Naayanar, Thillai Vazh Andanar, 63 Nayanmaars, Bhairavar, Suryan, Chandran and Saneeswaran. In the outer peripheral of the Temple there is a Niruthi Ganapathy and an Anandha Vinayagar on the extreme ends of the peripheral. Midway there is a Peepal Tree and a Neem Tree beneath which a Vinayagar and a few Naga Devatha Idols are kept. Next to this is an exclusively constructed Naga Devatha Sannadhi in which Naga Devathas are kept and Prayed. Beyond this there is a Sannadhi at the epic centre of which Surya Bhagwan is seen driving His Horse driven Chariot and around Him the Navagrahas are equidistantly placed. There are two wooden palanquins in which the Urchavamoorthies are carried on festive occasions. The Sthala Viruksham is unknowm but it is considered that Jasmine or Malligai is considered as precious to God Mallikeshwarar. The Pushkarani or Temple Tank is called as Mallikeshwara Theertham. The Temple premises is kept clean meticulously. The Rajagopuram and the Gopurams are gorgeously painted in multiple colours. The Temple has a Ghoshala and a Madapalli for free Annadhanam. Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. This is considered as a Marana Bayam or a Yama Bayam Pokkum Sthalam.
