There is a huge 7 tiered Rajagopuram which is the biggest ever Rajagopuram in Krishnagiri District and it marks the entrance to the Temple.  Sri Penneshwarar is the Presiding Deity and He is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.  Penneswarar is also known by another name as Pennai Nayanar.  He is found in the form of a Shiva Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple.  Facing the Sanctum Sanctorum are two Nandhi Vaahanams.  One of the Nandhi seems to tilit its head a little and it is believed that the Sun Rays pass through it and falls on the Shiva Lingam at the Sanctum Sanctorum on Maasi Magam.  His Consort here is Goddess Vedanayagi Ambal and She occupies a separate Sub Shrine.  There is a Vinayagar Idol along with a Moonjur Vaahanam just outside the Sanctum Sanctorum.  There is a Urchavar Idol and a Natarajar Idol kept close to the Sanctum Sanctorum.  On entering the Temple there are two Uchi Maram or Uchi Tree beneath which several Naga Devatha Idols, a Siva Lingam, Rahu, Kethu and a Crow Idols are kept.  Just as we approch the Sanctum Sanctorum there is a Idol of Uchista Ganapthy chiselled on the outer wall.  There are Sub Shrines for Naalvar, Balaganapathy, Sapthamathas, Maakaali, Seetha, Ramar, Lakshmana, Anjaneyar, Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Brahmma, Durgai, Chandikeshwarar, Naagar, and Kaala Bhairavar.  There are five different Lingams here viz. 1) Arputha Lingam, 2) Anandha Lingam, 3) Mangala Lingam, 4) Aishwarya Lingam and 5) Poorna Lingam.  There is a Navagraha enclosure too.  This is a unique Temple since it has been built at a crucial place abutting a River and a Hill namely River Then Ponniyaru, and Thennaga Kailaya Malai.  It is believed that the Pandavas had come to this place and had offered Thidhi to their forefathers.  As a result of this we could see several local villagers coming here on a regular basis to offer rituals to their forefathers too. It is believed that this Temple was built by King Kulothunga Cholan III after his victory over the Jain and there are inscriptions for the same.  it is also said that King Raja Raja Cholan of the Chola Dynasty and various Hoysala Kinga such as Veera Raamnathan, Sameswaran, Viswanathan etc patronised this Temple and promoted it to a great extent.  Generally all Temples built by the Chola Kings are South facing and this Temple too is similar to it but the Moolavar or Presiding Deity is East facing.  The Temple has been built in a whopping area with a huge compound wall fillted with a giant wooden gate.  There are rows of shops located outside the Temple and there is ample parking area too for any number of cars and two wheelers. The Sthala Viruksham is a Palm Tree or Panai Maram and the Sacred Tank is Then Pennai.  Shivarathri, Pradhosham, Thiru Karthigai are celebrated in a grand manner.  This Temple is a Raahu and Kethu Parihaara Sthalam.  It is also very famous and notable as Pithru Dosha Parihaara Sthalam.  A Girivala Paathai already exists for Devotees to circumambulate the hill.  Recently Tamil Actor Vijai has illuminated this pathway with lights and thus it becomes easier for the Devotees to fulfill their prayers by Girivalam.
