  • Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple, Gunaseelam, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu

Gunaseelam derives its name from the Tamil word Gunam which means Cure and Seelam which means Place and hence the name Gunaseelam for this place. Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple is also called as Gunaseelam Vishnu Temple and Prasanna Venketesa Perumal Temple and it is a Abhimaana Sthalam dedicated to Maha Vishnu. It is located close to the banks of River Cauvery and is just 20 Kms away from Trichy City. It is believed that Gunaseela Rishi had been to the Himalayas and on his way back he stayed at Tirupathi and was attracted and fascinated by Venkatachalapathi. He pleaded with God and requested Him to come and Bless all in Gunaseelam for which he underwent severe penance. This is the reason as to why God Venkatachalapathy appeared in Gunaseelam Temple.  It is believed that the Presiding Deity is a Swayambhu in this Temple. Though the Consort of the Presiding Deity is Goddess Alamelu Mangai there is no dedicated Sub Shrine or Sannadhi for Her. This Temple gains prominence since it is said to be a curative place for all the Mentally Challenged people who are kept within the Temple premises  (with the permission of the Government ) for a period of 48 days. After the 48 days period such mental problem of the concern person is either cured or mitigated to a great extent. For this sole purpose the Temple has recently set up a Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre that has the Official Permission and Stamp of the Tamil Nadu Government and this is the first of its kind. It is the custom of this Temple that every afternoon and every night after the Pooja the Holy Theertham is brought out and sprinkled on the faces of the Devotees, particularly the Mentally Challenged People. As a result of continuous such sprinkling of the Holy Theertham for a few days it is believed that such people come back to their senses and try to behave normally in the society. There are many special Offerings, Sevas and Darshans for the sake of the Devotees. This Temple has a big following of Devotees and is a Kuladeivam for most people of Trichy, Tanjavur and Pudukkottai District. Ear Boring ceremonies and Tonsuring are done for several Devotees. The Sacred Tank or Theertham is Cauvery and Papavinasam.
