Mannargudi is also known as Mannai by some and hence this Temple is called as Mannai Rajagopalaswamy Temple too.  Rajagopalaswamy is an incarnation of Lord Krishna. The Temple was initiated by King Kulothunga Cholan I. Subsequently other Chola, Vijayanagara and Hoysala Kings too contributed in their own way. It was the Thanjavur Nayaks who took keen interest in this Temple and were instrumental in developing it. Along with Guruvayurappan Temple this Temple is considered as Dhakshin Dwaraka. This Temple has a 11 tiered East facing Rajagopuram. The Temple's Rajagopuram is the 4th tallest among Vaishnava Temples in India. At the entrance of the Temple there is a building belonging to Ahobilam and Thothathri Mutt. A Kalyana Mandabam belonging to Rajagopalaswamy Temple is also there. Beneath the Rajagopuram is a Anjaneya Swamy Idol embedded on the wall. On the left side is the Temple Nandhavanam and on the right the Temple elephant Sengamalam is tethered in another Mandabam. Close to this is the Temple Chariot. A Yoga Narasimhar Sannadhi is also seen here. Further away is a huge multi pillared Mandabam and before it is another 5 tiered East facing Rajagopuram. All the Pillars are either etched or embedded. The Temple EO Office is located close this place. There are a pair of Dwarabalagaas and there is a small Sub Shrine for Desigar. Again there is a multi pillared Mandabam which leads to the Sanctum Sanctorum which is slightly elevated with around 10 steps. A Hanuman Sannadhi is seen there. Close to this are two Metallic Dwarabalagaas and two more Dwarabalagaas made out of black Vigraham. The Moolavar is called as Vasudeva Perumal  and is 7 feet tall while the Urchavar is Rajagopalaswamy. His Consort is Shenbagavalli Thayar and also known as Hemambujavalli Thayar. There is a Santhana Gopalan Silver Idol who is believed to Bless any childless couple. The outer peripheral has Sub Shrines for Andal, Nammalwar, Manavala Maamunigal, Chakrathalwar, Thirumangai Alwar and Padhugai Hanuman where a pair of Divine Feet is placed. Shenbaga Lakshmi  is the Consort and she occupies a East facing Shrine which is fully etched and engraved with multiple pillars. There are several Dwarabalagis leading to the Shrine of Goddess. The Urchavamurthy here is Sengamala Thaayar. Around the Thaayar Sanndhi several Images of various Perumals and Goddesses are drawn on the Walls. There is a Sub Shrine in which Kulasekara Alwar, Peyazwar, Boodhathu Alwar and Poigai Alwar. Close to this is a square shaped on top of which is the Vasuki Serpant and on top of this are 8 elephants, then a Koorma Avatharam, Dasavatharam and on top of it is Kalki and Krishna and a Thulasi Maadam is placed on this and the roof of this Mandabam is not closed so that the Thulasi Maadam gets Air and Water from the Rain. The Temple has a Temple Kitchen or a Madapalli and  a Annadhaanakoodam. The Temple consists of 24 Shrines, 7 Mandapams, 18 Vimanams and 7 Praharams. There is a 1000 Pillared Hall which was built by Vijayaraghava Nayak. It is surprising that this Temple had never been glorified by the Alwars. The closest was when Thirumangai Alwar came up to the entry point and then returned thereafter. Panguni Brahmothsavam, Krishna Jayanthi and Chariot festival draws enormous Devotees from far and near. The Temple has a Pushkarani known as Krishna Theertham. There is a huge library within the Temple premises where Divine Books more particularly about Mannargudi and Rajagopala Swamy Temple is available. Totally there are Temple Cars or Chariots available for this Temple. One is located within the Temple and the other is close to the Car Park. The Temple has a huge paid Car Parking facility.
