Sri Ramanathasamy Temple is located in Rameshwaram mainland and on the Banks of Bay of Bengal. This Temple is built on a whopping 15 Acres of land. This Temple is so huge that it has 4 Rajagopurams on all the four sides of the Temple. The Rajagopuram on the East and West are much bigger than those built North and South. The Eastern Rajagopuram is made up of 9 tiers. On entering the Temple premises there is a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaaganam facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. On the right is a Sannadhi for Anjaneya Swamy who is said to be of 16 feet high. He is sunk 8 feet below the ground touching the Sea and the remaining 8 feet of the Idol is visible outside. There are Idols of Ganapathi and Subramanyar on the way to the Moolasthanam. There are two more Sub Shrines like this for Vinayagar and Subramaniyar. In the first corridor the Idols of Suryan, Usha, Prathyuksha, Sankaralingam along with the 63 Nayanmargal are kept. In the Western corridor the Idols of Vachreswarar, Manonmani, Kandhan, Sankaranarayanan, Arthanaareeswarar, Ganga Nadhar and Chandrasekar are kept. The Northern corridor has Idols for Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana, Hanuman and Vibheeshana, Natarajar, Sivakami. Among these Natarajar Idol is well placed beneath a Rudhraksha Pandhal. Chandran is seen along with Rohini and Krithigai. There are Idols for Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana, Anjaneya, Vibhishanan too. Lingothbavar’s Idol and the Uppu Lingam prepared by the Ambal Devotee, Rayar is also seen here. The Ambals’s Shrine is South facing and She is also known here as Parvadhavarthini or Malai Valar Kaadhali. Close to the Ambal Shrine the Idols for Kalyana Sundaresar, Thirumaal, Brahmman are seen. It is said that Devotees who come to this Temple ought to bathe first in the Agni Theertham which is the Bay of Bengal. This Temple has the longest Corridor among all Hindu Temples. There are 64 Sacred Tanks out of which 22 are considered as important than the rest. These 22 Tanks represent Lord Rama's 22 Arrows in His Quiver. Bay of Bengal which is known as Agni Theertham here is considered as the first Theertham.This Temple is known as Paadal Petra Sthalam since this Temple was praised by Nayanars, Appar, Sundarar and Tirugnana Sambandar. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
