Prasanthi Nilayam is located in a quite place called Puttaparthi in Ananthapur District of Andhra Pradesh State.  It is located 800 meters above the mean sea level.  In the earlier days Puttaparthi was a small hamlet but in recent days it can boast of having an Airport.  Puttaparthi Sai Baba who was born here and who is considered as a person next to God evinced keen interest in building Prashanthi Nilayam brick by brick.  Now the same Prasanthi Nilayam has Engineering, Medical and Dental Colleges all over this place and also runs several schools for the poor and downtrodden.  The main feature here was the Daily twice darshan by Puttaparthi Sai Baba who literally walked through the crowd of Devotees Blessing everyone with both his hands and waving to the crowd so that they get a Divinely cheer in the mind and heart.  Plucking Vibhuthi (a Divine Ash) and sweets from the air he would give them to the nearest standing Devotee.  In earlier days Puttaparthi Sai Baba Himself accepted handwritten letters requests from the Devotees but in later days His Assistants did this job on behalf of Puttaparthi Sai Baba.  He would also select a handful of Devotees with whom he intracted directly and at times gave interviews too.  Apart from the local Devotees people from all over India thronged here to have a darshan and get His Blessings.  The Prashanthi Nilayam was one among the few Divine places that received a maximum number of Foreign Devotees.  The Ashram has a massive and large Prayer Hall and Daily prayers and Spiritual activities are done here in a big way.  The construction of the Prashanthi Nilayam went on for nearly 2 years and on 23rd November 1950, on the 24th Birthday of Sathya Sai Baba it was thrown open to the public and Devotees.  It offers a massive accomadations to outstation Devotees.  Apart from Prashanthi Nilayam there are several private AC Hotels to cater to the needs of Devotees coming from all outstations.  The International Sai Organisations takes a plunge and helps the State Governments during crisis situaton.  Now withn a Railway Station, Bus Termini and an Airport the influx of devotees to Puttaparthi is more than ever before.  Scores of permanent and temporary shops sell Divine products about Sathya Sai Baba like books, key chains, images etc.  This place gains more significance since it happens to be the birth place od Puttaparthi Sai Baba.  Some say that the inflow of Devotees here has dwindled a little after the passing away of Puttaparthi sathya Sai Baba a few years ago.  Anyhow Prashanthi Nilayam is a befitting name since its the Abode of Supreme Peace.
