The ancient name of Sikkal was Thiruchikkal or Thirusikkal as the people used to call it then. The story behind it was that Sage Vasishtar made a Butter Lingam and placed it on the ground. Later when he attempted to lift the Shiva Lingam it got entangled in the Jasmine plants around it. This entanglement of the Shiva Lingam to the Jasmine plants lead to the place getting the name Sikkal which means entanglement. The actual name of the Temple Sri Navaneetheshwara Temple but in recent days many Devotees have started calling this Temple Sikkal Singaravelar Temple. There is a Welcome Arch leading to the Temple and there are rows of cemented beams leading to the Temple. The Temple has a seven tiered East facing Rajagopuram. On entering the Temple there is a Sundara Ganapathy Idol and another Idol for Gnana Dhandapani, which is the name of Murugan. There is a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Temple has to be reached by climbing 10 to 12 steps. In the Moolasthanam Sri Navaneetheswarar who is the Presiding Deity is East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Though the Presiding Deity or Moolavar is said to be Sri Navaneetheshwarar it is Sri Sikkal Singaravelan who is more prominent than anyone in this Temple. Sikkal Singaravelan has just one face and is South facing as though He is turned towards Thiruchendhur. The Ambal is known as Sakthiyayadakshi or Velnedunkanni Ambal and She occupies a separate Shrine and is seen in a standing posture South facing. At the threshold of the Ambal Sannadhi are the Idols of Bala Singaravelan and Sukra Vara Amman. There are Sub Shrines for Thiagaraja Swamy and Goddess Gowri, Suryan, Chandran, Saneeswaran, 63 Naaynanmaars, Kasi Viswanathar, Kasi Visalakshi, Kanni Vinayagar, Arumugam, Gajalakshmi (Mahalakshmi), Kaala Bhairavar and Navagraha Sannadhi. Around the Koshtam the Idols of Lingothbhavar, Karthigai Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Brahmma, Vishnu Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. Many Devotees who have visited Sikkal Singaravelan Temple and Ettukudi Murugan say that there is a striking similarity between the two Idols. This could mostly be attributed due to the fact that both the Idols of these Temple were crafted by the same Sculptors. Technically this Temple can be included in the list of Maada Kovil Temple since the entire Temple premises has been built on an elevated platform. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is Jasmine Plant. There are many Sacred Tanks like Parkulam, Ammakulam, Gayatheertham, Ilakkumi Theertham and Virutha Kaveri. The Temple has a massive compound wall. The Temple authorities collect a small sum for parking the vehicles. This area is infested with so many cement pillars and beams that even the best among the drivers find it arduous to park their vehicles. Chitrai Brahmmothsavam, Kandasasti, Vaikasi Visakam, Karthigai are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
