Sri Varaha Swamy Temple is built on the banks of River Thungabadhra in the 13th Century and it’s a replica of the Vijayanagara style of Architecture. Since it resembles Saivite Temple many believe that it was a Shiva Temple in the ancient days. Anyhow it’s said to be an Avathar of a Mythological Boar, an incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu. It is widely believed that Lord Maha Vishnu took the form of a Boar and brought back the Earth from the deep ocean. Demon Hiranyaksha was supposed to have immersed the Earth there and there was a pitched battle between Maha Vishnu and Hiranyaksha before the Earth could be retrieved. In ancient days the King and his family members used to visit this Temple. During the Moghul period intensive damage was done to the Deities and the carvings on the walls of the Temple. Though this Temple has a Rajagopuram it looks dilapidated and in shambles. Most part of the Temple is buried in sand. Almost all the Sub Shrines within this Temple are in ruins with No Deity. Likewise the Presiding Deity of Sri Varaha Swamy too has been removed from the Sanctum Sanctorum and hence there is no Poojas done. As of today it stands just as a Tourist attraction drawing a lot of Visitors and Tourists alike. This Temple is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958.
