Sri Vaseeswarar Temple, Thirupachur, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu

  • Sri Vaseeswarar Temple, Thirupachur, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu

This Temple is located very close to Thiruvallur to Thiruthani Main Road close to the Southern Bank of Poondi Reservoir and could be easily identified by the Temple's Entrance Arch.  The Presidng Deity is Sri Vaseeswarar or otherwise known as Pasoornathar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva.  His Consort Parvathi is known as Thangathali or Paupathinayaki.  The Temple has  a five Tier Rajagopuram.  The Vimana Tower above the Sanctum Sanctorum is Gajabrushta (just like the top back of an elephant)  in design.  Saints Thirunavukkarasar & Thirugnansambandar had sung several Hymns in praise of this Temple.  This Temple is revered in the 7th Century's Thevaram and is a Paadal Petra Sthalam.  It is believed that King Karikala Cholan II had built this Temple.  Vaseeswarar is a Swayambhu Lingam and is firmly placed on a square pedestal.  The Lingam which is tilted slightly bears a scar mark on its top and it is said that this Lingam is never touched even by the Priests during Poojas or the daily rituals.  Hence He is known as  THEENDA THIRUMENI.   The Goddess Blesses Her Devotees from a separate Shrine to the right of Vaseeswarar Shrine.  There are Shrines for Murugan, Iyyappan, Natarajar and Veerabhadrar.  Unlike other Shiva Temples Kaala Bhairavar is not found here.  Instead there is a Swarna Bhairavar.  There are eleven different Pillayar or Vinayagar of various size, all kept within an enclosure which is known as VINAYAGAR SABHAI.   The Swarna Kaali's legs are bound and special Poojas are done on Full Moon Days.  The Navagraha Sannidhi is very spacious and quite different from other Temples.  There is an Annadhana Koodam on the rear of the Temple where Devotees are served Free Lunch and Prasadams.  The Sthala Viruksham is a Bhamboo Tree.  The Temple needs are looked after very well by the Thiruthani Devasthanam under whose jurisdiction this Temple falls.  The Temple has a huge sprawling area but is kept very clean and tidy under the supervision of the Chief Priest M.Rajappa Gurukkal.  Vaikasi Brahmotsavam and Shivarathiri are celebrated in a grand manner.
