Arulmigu Vetri Velappar Temple or Paarai Velappar is located in Vilpatty village which is closer to Kodaikanal in Dindigul District. In earlier times this Temple was referred as Paarai Velappar but as years progressed Devotees believed that Velappar brought victory to those Devotees who came and Worshipped Him here. Therefore He was referred as Vetri Velappar instead of Paarai Velappar. Its a venerable and an age old Temple. It is believed that this ancient Temple was built by the Pandya King known as Koon Pandyan. There are many inscriptions of Fish Symbol in a few places within the Temple premises. Due to the vageries of nature and other reasons this Temple was almost dilapidated but it has been renovated and spruced up in the recent years. It is widely believed that during the days of Pandavas they had come to this Temple in disguise and had spent their time here. They used to practice with their Bows and Arrows as a result of which this village was known as Vilpooty or Vilpatti. The Presiding Deity here is a West facing Sri Vetri Velappar who is otherwise known as Sri Murugan. It is generally said that this Vetri Velappar comes in the dream of the Devotees who visit this Temple. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Vetri Velappar is seen with a Spear and splendiferously mounted atop a Shiva Lingam. It is said that Sri Vetri Velappar trounced and subjugated the Demons and Worshipped Mahadevar, Maha Vishnu and Brahmma for whom there are Sub Shrines in the outer peripheral of the Temple. The resplendent Idols of Lord Shiva, Ganapathy and Kaala Bhairavar are embossed on the walls of the Temple and they are eye captivating to the Devotees. There is an exclusive Sub Shrine for Idumban who draws a lot of Devotees. It is said that in earlier times there was a Navagraha Sannadhi here which was then mutilated due to the vageries of Nature and right now only the Nine Peedams are found. Its a proven fact that Palani Dhandayuthapani Temple, Poomparai Kuzhandhai Velappar Temple and this Temple are all geographically located in a straight line. During the Tamil Month of Panguni the Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Vetri Velappar is taken around the Temple premises in a Palanquin. Sri Vetri Velappar has many fan followings in and around Kodaikanal who consider Him as their Kula Deivam. Pradosham, Panguni Uthiram, Thiru Karthigai, Thai Poosam are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
