Sringeri is a Temple town situated in the midst of Sahayadri Hills  on the Banks of River Tunga or Thunga in Chikmagalur District in Karnataka. It is a pioneer amongst all other Temples and was  brought into the limelight by the Great Shri Adhi Shankarar. It is one of the most renowned pilgrim centres of Karnataka. The Temple stands almost at the entrance to the River Tunga and is an architectural marvel. Its a  fusion of Hoysala, Chalukya, Vijaynagara and Tamil styles, This Temple was built by the pontiff, Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha Acharya, as a tribute to his Guru, the 10th Acharya, Sri Vidyatirtha during the reign of the brothers, Harihara and Bukka, the Founders of the Vijaynagar Empire. His brother and succeeding Acharya Sri Vidyaranya was the Guru of the Vijaynagar Empire, founded in 1336 which had its capital in Hampi. The Temple has twelve pillars adorned with sculptures and they represent the twelve zodiac signs and it is said that they are placed in such a way that the rays of the sun fall on each of them in the order of the calender or the twelve solar months. The Vijayanagara Emperors influenced by Vidyaranya, have made great contributions to the Temple structures. The Temple Rajagopuram stands almost 110 feet tall and is East facing. There are a few shops selling Garlands and Flowers around the Rajagopuram area. Car parking is banned before the Temple and they have provided an exclusive car parking area closeby. On entering the Temple premises through the gates of the Rajagopuram there is a huge building on the left  supposed to be a guest house and on the right side is another complex which is used now as a dining hall. The Consort of the Presiding Deity is Goddess Sharadhambal and she occupies a Sub Shrine and Blesses her Devotees and  She is seen holding a Veena in her hand. The Ambal Urchavamurthy too is found within the Sub Shrine. Around the Ambal Sub Shrine are replicas of several Vaahanams made out of Silver & Gold. They are all kept safely in a glass panel. There is a Gold and Silver Temple Chariot kept closeby. There is another huge Mandabam called as Chandrasekara Bharathi Sabha Bhavan where functions are conducted. Opposite to this building are several counters for various Sevas and Prasadams etc. There is a Yaga Mandabam called as Jagathguru Shri Narasimha Bharathi Yaga Mandabam which looks lovely with Mangalore type ceiling. Opposite to this is a huge Stone Dwajasthambam around 40 feet tall. From within the Temple the Tunga  River can be seen and they have built around 40 steps to go and reach the River. This sight looks awesome.  Close to the River is an Idol of a frof which is shielded from above by a serpant which has spread its hood.  There are several Sub Shrines like Vidhyaranya, Jagathguru Sureshwaracharya, Shethrapala Malayala Brahmma Devaru, Sakthi Ganapathy, Adhi Shankarar, Garudar, Janardhana Swamy, Thorana Ganapathy etc.  The Main Shrine has been trifurcated and in it are 1) Vidhya Ganapathy, 2) Vidhya Shankara and the 3) Durgambal. The Temple has a huge Madapalli or Temple Kitchen and Free Lunch and Dinner are supplied to all Devotees visiting this Temple .

The only point of concern in this Temple is that though the Temple starts very early all other Sub Shrines are closed almost till 8 AM and after 8 AM one after the other, the Prohits trickle in and open these Sub Shrines. So most Devotees who reach the Temple for early Dharshan  go away disappointed without seeing the Sub Shrines since the Poojaris come as late as 8 AM. The Temple Administrator should sort out this issue soon and ensure & help all Devotees to have a good dharshan in all the Sub Shrines.
