Virudhachalam is located between Viluppuram and Kumbakonam. This Temple lies on the banks of River Manimutharu. The Presiding Deity is Sri Virudhagireeswarar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Virudhagireeswarar is in the form of a Swayambumurthy here. The Goddess here is Viruddhambikai or Balambikai. The Temple is also known as Thirumudukundram or Pazhamalai. The 3 Saivite Saints Gnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar & Sundarar have praised this Temple in Thevaram. The Temple is said to be around 2000 years old whereas the Vanni Tree itself is 1700 years old. There are 7 majestic Rajagopurams here. The prime Rajagopuram consists of 7 tiers and is East facing. The Rajagopuram facing the Moolasthanam comprises of 5 tiers and there is a massive multi pillared Mandapam facing the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity is known here as Virudhagireeswarar and He occupies a separate Shrine in a multi pillared Mandapam. The Mian Deity is East facing and in the form of a Shiva LIngam and He is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Virudhambigai Ambal has a three tier East facing Shrine and there are 3 sets of coloured and black Dwara Baalakis. There is a Sub Shrine for Valli Devasena Samedha Murugan and there are two Dwara Balakas on the threshold. Girivalam or Circumambulating on Full Moon Days is very auspicious. Lord Vinayaka is kept 18 Feet underground as Azhathu Vinayagar. There are Sub Shrines for Yoga Dhakshinamoorthy, 63 Naayanmaars, Sapthamathas, Dasabuja Vallaba Ganapathy, Bindhu Madhava Perumal , Gajalakshmi, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, 3 Vinayagar, Varuna Lingam, Lingothbhavar, Chandikeshwarar, Brahmma and Durgai, Surya Lingam and Suryamoorthy. The outer peripheral has Sub Shrines for Pancha Lingam, Annamalaiyaar etc. The Temple has a Prasada counter, a Divine book shop and a Temple Office. It also has a huge Madapalli with an Annadhana Koodam. The Chola Kings had a big hand in upbringing this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the biggest ever Saivite Temple in Tamil Nadu. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. Devotees who breathe their last here are considered to attain Moksha direct. A visit to this Temple is equated to a visit to the Kasi Temple at Varanasi.
