This Temple was built between 1744 and 1769 by Ahom King Pramatta Singha and King Rajeswar Singha. It is built on Sukreshwar or Itakhuli Hills near River Brahmaputhra in the Pan Bazaar area of Guwahati. On reaching the Temple premises Devotees may have to climb 20 to 30 steps to reach the main Temple. There is a Welcome Arch constructed close to these steps. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva known as Sukreswar here. Saint Sukra is said to have visited here and meditated to Lord Shiva. The Temple has one of the largest Shivalingas in India. Many foreigners visit here to have a glimpse of the largest Shivalinga. This is considered as the Sixth Jyothirlinga in India. Close to the Sanctum there is a Nat Mandir with Iron Sheets as roof top. The Hillock were the Temple is located is called as Hasthagiri due to the hump shape of an Elephant. There is a Shrine for Lord Vishnu within this Temple premises. During Maha Shivarathri the Temple is illuminated attracting lots of Devotees. This Temple can be visited during any season throughout the year. The Sunset and the Ferry ride attracts several Tourists and Devotees alike.
