The Presiding Deity is Sun God. He is found here with His two Consorts Usha and Chaaya. King Kulothunga Cholan-I had built this Temple between 1060 AD to 1118 AD. The Temple is built in a typical Dravidian Style. It is West facing with a five tiered Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity is in a Chariot like Vimanam. The Image of Suryanar is in a standing Posture with His two Consorts. The Vijayanagara Kings had a big hand in renovating the earlier structures of the Temple. This Temple has stood the test of time and stands majestically. There are only two Temples in the whole of India which are dedicated to the Sun God. One is Konark and the other one is Suryanar Kovil. The difference between them is that Idol Worship is followed in Suryanar Kovil while it is not so in Konark Temple. The Temple has seperate Shrines for all the other planetary Deities. Surya Jayanthi or Ratha Sapthami is celebrated here in a grand manner. This Temple is one of the nine Navagraha Temples very popular in Tamil Nadu. It is generally believed that anyone taking bath in the Temple Tank viz Surya Pushkarani is cured off all their ailments.
